Height and Growth

A child's growth is tracked from the moment they are born. Within the first few minutes of life measurements for length, weight and head circumference are taken and then recorded onto your baby's own development chart to begin mapping their growth. Doctors have been mapping the growth of children over many years and use percentile bands to plot a child's growth and pattern over time. The aim of the chart is to show consistent growth from baby to older child and in some cases the chart may be used to detect developmental problems.

What Affects Your Child's Height?

Whilst genes ultimately play a huge part in determining how tall your child will be (i.e. tall parents usually have tall children) there are some other factors which can impact a child's growth such as:

  • Gender
  • Environment
  • Nutrition
  • Hormones
  • Physical Activity
  • General Health

General Growth Guidelines

In general height will usually develop along the following guidelines:

  • 0-12 months - grows approximately 25cm
  • 1-2 years - grows approximately 13cm
  • 2-3 years - grows approximately 9cm a year
  • 3 years to puberty - grows approximately 5cm a year

It is important to note children grow at different rates. Some begin their growth early whilst others are late bloomers. However, the majority of children will have doubled their birth height by the time they reach 4 years of age.

How to Predict a Child's Adult Height?

There are no proven ways to accurately predict a child's adult height. However, there are a couple of formulas detailed below which can provide a reasonable guestimate for child growth:

Formula One

  • Add the mother's height and the father's height in either inches or centimetres
  • Add 5 inches (13 centimetres) for boys or subtract 5 inches (13 centimetres) for girls
  • Divide by two

Formula Two

  • This formula is less accurate but another way to estimate a child's adult height is to double his or her height at age 2.
